General Info

Learning with ALNS is fun, supportive and practically-bent.  This page outlines what you can expect.

Session format

Session 1 (usually 1-1.5 hours)

In your first session, we will discuss your situation more – your objectives; what you can do; and why and what you want to learn.  We will also explore how you’d like to learn – the materials, activities and session format that best suit your needs.  Adult L&N development is best when it is useful now.  It’s not like school.  There’s more than one way to learn anything.  Your first session helps us work that all out.

From there, we start learning.  You show me a bit of what you can do.  I start getting a feel for your skills and info gaps.  By the end of this session, you should have a sense of what we can achieve. It often takes 4 to 5 weeks to get a full picture of what you need and the learning format which suits you best.

Follow-up sessions (1-2 hours)

After your first week, sessions usually include:

  • touch base before the session starts
  • review the last week’s learning, including any homework
  • focused learning and skills development
  • temperature check & homework

Sessions are often split into half-hour segments to help learners build several skills at once.

Homework is given to help students practise out of session.  It’s only there if it helps.  Life is full for adult learners!  Do whatever you want to and can.

Session size

ALNS can run literacy & numeracy classes for small groups.  Most students learn individually.  Small groups include up to 5 people of similar skill levels and tend to be organised by the clients.

Session length

1.5 to 2 hour sessions are recommended.  That helps you you learn, practise and explore things at a good pace.  One question can lead to all sorts of things to discuss and look at.

Session length is your call. It can change over time.  We work it out when we first talk.  I ask for feedback often to keep your learning on track.

The minimum timeframe is 1 hour.

Session frequency

Your learning with ALNS is usually once a week. This is often enough.  It leaves you time to practise and explore on your own.  More regular sessions are possible.

Depending upon my schedule, sessions can be on week days or on the weekend.

All sessions are by appointment.

Learning with ALNS Remotely/Online

ALNS’ literacy & numeracy sessions are run online/remotely using Google Meet.  All you need for that is a gmail account.

Fees

I offer different types of sessions so my fees can vary.  Please enquire.

Private sessions are paid for before each class, via cash, funds transfer, Square or PayPal.  The latter two options incur a surcharge to cover their fees.

Invoices and receipts are available.

Same-day cancellations and no-shows are charged at full fee.

Reimbursement for travel expenses may apply, depending upon the location.

ALNS offers a sliding fee scale for people who want to learn together.  Feel free to organise your own study group.

Learning materials

We use materials that are relevant.  That often means you bring things you want or need to work with.  We work out what’s best when we first connect and confirm that as we go.

For sessions, you should bring note paper, pens, pencils and eraser, and a folder or file to put your notes safely in.  Your own device is handy for accessing apps; developing your skills; and/or researching online.

I always set homework.  It helps you practise and build your skills.  You can also create your own activities.  Some students only want to learn in session.  That’s more than fine.  Learn at the pace that suits you best.
