About Adult Literacy & Numeracy Services
Adult Literacy & Numeracy Services was launched in 2016 to help school leavers, job seekers, adult learners, retirees and L&N teachers. Working in the field between 2013-15, Fran noticed how government funding criteria can affect programs. There are many cost-effective and high-quality L&N programs, teachers and institutions around the globe. Sometimes, however, things can get squeezed in ways that affect those who want to learn.
Many people thrive in Australia’s government-funded adult education system. Some, however, want a slower, more personalised and/or detailed approach to learning. ALNS provides relaxed, enjoyable, supportive and relevant learning experiences. Whilst some people want to learn only what they have to, others (believe it or not!) want to learn “properly”.
Fran has been teaching adults since 2000, in large and small groups, and one-on-one. Before then, she regularly trained people in workplace systems and computer programs. She has always pursued multiple interests, including several languages to beginner/intermediate level (French, Hebrew). She’s only fluent in English but these experiences help her empathise with learners.
Fran qualified as a Teacher of Adult Literacy & Numeracy in 2014. She holds a Cert IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40110); a Business Degree (Strategic Marketing); and a Working with Children Check. Over time, Fran has partially studied Chinese Medicine, Speech Pathology and Ministry (without finishing). She’s mentored kindergarten readers and taught intuitive development since the 1990’s. Altogether, these experiences help Fran to deliver well-paced lessons. She does assign homework and encourages practice based upon her student’s other commitments.
A qualified strategic marketer and planner, Fran also helps business people to develop their skills. She has managed portfolios and supported management and staff in private and public sectors. Fran has built and operates her own businesses, and is well-aware of what this can involve. As a literacy & numeracy teacher – general, workplace, academic or computer – Fran can help.
About Adult Literacy & Numeracy Services’ approach to L&N learners
In the 1970’s, Australian education departments decided that teaching (and learning!) maths and grammar wasn’t so useful. Many of today’s adults, therefore, missed out on developing these skills. Fran’s school, thankfully, ignored these directives.
Fran is 100% learner-focused – what she does and how she does it revolves around her client’s needs. Some people want their program developed for them; others want to have input. However you want to learn, whatever your reasons, the first step is to meet and discuss your situation. From there, Fran develops a plan that’s regularly checked and updated with you.
Fran aims to help adults and school leavers enjoy learning English literacy and numeracy “properly”. Not everyone wants to learn the details – amazingly, however, some people do! Whether you’re studying, unemployed, working, new to English or just needing help, get in contact.

About ALNS’ buddying service for L&N teachers
Recently, government funding and employment initiatives have radically reshaped adult L&N programs. In some instances, this has seen the support provided to teachers trimmed. With this, the pressure can mount to do even more work out of hours. It’s concerning to hear of some teachers working all week – unpaid and alone – for less than one day in a classroom.
In an industry born to empower others, the trends above are concerning. ALNS has been launched to help teachers, too (irrespective of their background). It seeks to push back at any excessive cost-focus that negatively impacts people. Working collaboratively, Fran aims to help educators deliver as they know they can.
As an L&N buddy, Fran works with the teacher to plan, prepare, assess or deliver lessons. Her confidential, customer-driven and friendly manner helps you mentor as you know you should. Fran’s approach is customer-centred, strategic and focused upon quality outcomes. This isn’t a service where clients handball and run – what we put in, we tend to get out. Fran’s eye for detail and project management skills help her to notice gaps and opportunities; meet course objectives; and minimise waste. If you need help formatting, planning, assessing and/or validating your course, or just want a buddy or mentor, get in contact.
